Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific rulings made by the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there is no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
