The beluga known as Jelly Bean’s daughter Bertie Botts is an charming little “sweetheart”. Orion – nicknamed “Onion Ring” – is a large but fiercely protective companion. Zephyr has “constant motion” and moves like a wiggly creature. Lillooet the beluga is the “loving presence” with a kind nature.

Thirty enclosed marine mammals in a Canada-based entertainment facility have become pawns in a disagreement between a shuttered park, public officials and animal rights activists.

But those working directly with the whales say the heated discussion over their destiny often ignores the nuances of the whales who, after living their entire lives in enclosed habitats, have been carefully observed by the people who interact with them daily.

After the federal government disallowed the transfer of the belugas to China, the struggling attraction near the famous falls where they are kept threatened to end their lives unless the government funds the cost of their survival. Canada’s fisheries minister has denied that ultimatum, placing the 30 whales in an dangerously unstable position.

Intelligent Sea Creatures

Scientists say that beluga whales’ neural makeup, along with their mimicry abilities, cognitive challenges and communal behavior suggest they are remarkably smart creatures – something one caretaker learned personally.

Burgess spent several years as a marine mammal specialist, a role that involved earning the trust of the sea creatures.

“Developing those relationships over time takes a lot of dedication and a lot of affection. At the start, they’re very unsure of you,” she said. “Eventually, you gain reciprocal understanding. And they start being more trusting with you. It’s just so extraordinary and fulfilling.”

The trainer knew the whales were exceptionally cognitive, but she says she was nevertheless surprised by the nuances and quirks in their dispositions. She cultivated a deep bond for two female belugas with different personalities.

“One whale selected me. Cleo required effort,” she said. “Both transformed the way I perceive connection.”

Growing Opposition and Facility Decline

Burgess’s interaction with the whales developed against a background of rising activist criticism to their captivity.

During her three years at the attraction, seven belugas and the park’s one orca, the orca, succumbed. In total, nineteen belugas have perished at the park since recent years, a toll which the facility links to age-related causes, but which activists say points to the poor conditions in which they were kept.

The facility did not open to the visitors over the recent season, but Burgess says she witnessed firsthand consequences of the shutdown. “Concrete is falling apart from the enclosures because they’re in disrepair and not being repaired. The whales are curious and so they take pieces and move about with pieces in their jaws. It’s distressing to see.”

The park did not respond to a inquiry, but in the past stated: “The whales … receive far better veterinary services and around the clock attention than any individual in the UK, or elsewhere.”

Fate in Limbo and Potential Resolutions

Burgess was terminated from the park in the spring following the demise of a beluga, an unwell beluga the caretakers had to put down. She said the facility suspected particulars of the incident were disclosed to the media and she was let go not long after.

The lack of clarity over the whales’ future has left her and staff members in anguish. She says the facility’s threat to euthanize its whales is a bargaining chip and is a “logistically impossible” undertaking, adding any plans to humanely kill even a individual beluga would require “significant personnel”, trucks and heavy equipment.

“There’s no way in hell the staff would ever do it,” she said.

Burgess backs demands for the whales to be transferred promptly from the park, with its failing enclosures and dwindling staff.

In recent months, the nation’s government official denied a bid to export the whales to China.

“Granting the application would have meant a perpetual existence in captivity and a reversion to display for amusement,” the official wrote. “As society, we know that whales belong in the sea, not in tanks for our amusement. I could not in clear conscience approve an relocation that would prolong the treatment these belugas have endured.”

But Burgess said the official’s comments reflect a more general incorrect perception of the circumstances of life for belugas born in captivity.

“The society needs to grasp these are whales that have lived entirely in enclosed habitats and they will need ongoing assistance for the foreseeable future,” she said. “Many just don’t understand that it’s not as easy as saying ‘shut it down’.”

Sanctuary Proposal and Continuing Discussion

As decision makers attempt to find a resolution, suggestions have been put forward, some of which have minimal feasibility. An idea called for the belugas to be let go into the wilds of the Arctic – where whales are a key source of food for Inuit communities.

A planned sanctuary in the province of eastern Canada, which recently received government approval, has proven most controversial. The prospective site, which includes extensive space of penned in ocean, is not yet built. Supporters remain optimistic that it could ultimately represent a permanent answer for a number of the whales.

But, the former trainer says, among caretakers she’s consulted, there is “skepticism there” about what she said is “merely an untested concept” in the whales’ well-being.

Some experts say the idea of a refuge reflects a changing attitudes away from captive facilities and could represent a viable solution in the coming months.

Charles Vinick, leader of the initiative, said the site will mimic the mental engagement and feeding regimen the whales get from specialists, albeit in a much larger area. He said after the health of whales is fully assessed, which could take months|an extended period|
