France will start stopping migrant vessels in Channel following UK pressure
French officials have consented to start stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, after months of pressure from the United Kingdom.
This policy shift follows the Prime Minister sent a letter to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and saying there presently "have no effective preventive measure" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently acted to prevent the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both personnel and civilians.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel waters."
Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will start taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Significantly, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to stop boats, which had previously been suggested as a potential method to disable the engines of the vessels.
The decision to take action at all is a significant step forward, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this summer, which dropped off when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and French president, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to slash the sides of a boat.
Currently French authorities will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of northern France, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently delaying the commencement of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to avoid interception, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.
UK immigration authorities and the Prime Minister's office have been contacted for comment.
